PRIVATE PAY

Why I do not accept insurance

Insurance can be useful, but accepting it also gives the insurance company a role in determining what qualifies for treatment, how care must be documented, and which services it will cover.

I prefer for decisions about your care—including what we address, how we approach it, and how long we work together—to be based on what is clinically useful for you rather than what an insurance company authorizes.

Private pay also allows us to address concerns that may not fit neatly into an insurance company’s definition of medical necessity. You remain in control of whether your insurance company receives information about your treatment.

OUT-OF-NETWORK BENEFITS

How superbills work

Some insurance plans reimburse a portion of the cost of therapy provided by an out-of-network clinician. If your plan includes this benefit, I can provide a superbill for you to submit directly to your insurance company.

A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the information an insurance company generally requires to process an out-of-network claim. It may include your diagnosis, the type and date of service, the amount paid, and my professional information.

Providing a superbill does not guarantee reimbursement. Coverage, deductibles, reimbursement rates, and eligible services vary by plan. You are responsible for confirming your benefits and submitting the superbill to your insurance company.

Submitting a superbill also means your insurance company will receive the diagnosis and service information included on that document. You decide whether you want to use your out-of-network benefits.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY

Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health services?

Do I have an out-of-network deductible, and how much of it has been met?

After I meet the deductible, what percentage of the allowed amount will be reimbursed?

Are telehealth sessions covered?

Are couples therapy and diagnostic assessments eligible for reimbursement?

Is prior authorization required?

How do I submit a superbill?
